Did you ever wish that you could travel to Mars? Well, now you can (virtually, of course)! Just visit this website to add your name to a microchip, which will be sent aboard NASA's InSight Mars Lander. InSight is scheduled to launch in September of next year, so name submissions will only be accepted until September 8, 2015.
When you sign up, you will receive a boarding pass like the one shown in this post. You'll even collect frequent flyer points to show your participation over time in NASA's multiple mission #JourneytoMars program! So, if you missed the opportunity to buy a ticket aboard the Orion mission last December, or if you miss the deadline for InSight, don't worry--there will be more chances in the future to be a part of space history!
Anthropologist's Note: Public participation programs like these are a great way to expand public engagement, increase levels of space science awareness, and promote #STEM based education at all ages! In addition, it is interesting how people relate to the idea of being able to travel virtually to a distant planet through having their name physically sent on a microchip on a space mission.
